Edit your Google Business Profile without triggering a suspension
Google makes the final decision on every appeal and edit, and no guide can promise reinstatement. PinRevive is not affiliated with Google. Bracketed letters link to Google's official help pages (list).
You can edit a verified Business Profile to keep info accurate, but some edits are reviewed before going live and some may require verifying again. [C] The way to avoid trouble is to make edits that reflect the real world, and to know which fields are sensitive.
Changing your business name
Enter your name exactly as it appears on real-world signage, stationery and other branding. If you change it after verification you might need to verify again. [C] Don't include marketing taglines, store codes, hours, phone numbers or URLs, location or service info. Special characters and legal terms (LLC, Inc.) need real-world proof such as signage, business cards or invoices. [B]
Rebranding vs. a new business: a minor name change where proper nouns, services and category stay the same can be a rebrand on the existing profile. Otherwise, Google considers it a new business: mark the existing profile closed and create a new one. [B]
Changing your address
If you move to a new address after verification, you must verify again. [C] The address must be real and precise: no P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes, no virtual offices, and co-working offices need clear signage, customers received during business hours, and your own staff. [B] If you travel to customers and don't meet them at your address, you can choose not to show it. [C]
Changing categories
Adding or editing a category might prompt re-verification. [D] Choose the fewest, most specific categories that describe what the business is, not everything it has. Don't use categories as keywords. [B]
Changing your website
Enter the full URL with http:// or https://, make sure Googlebot isn't blocked, and check Search Console for penalties. [C] The site should represent your individual business location and be owned and managed by the business owner. [B] [F]
Before you click Save: a checklist
- New name/address matches your signage, website and documents
- You have documents ready: registration, license, utility bill (names and addresses match)
- You're making one sensitive change at a time (our suggestion, not a Google rule)
- You've saved dated screenshots of the profile before and after
- No verification code is in the mail, or if it is, you're not editing name, address or category. [E]
After you save, Google reviews changes before they update your profile; you can check the edit status. [C] If verification is needed: don't request a new code (it invalidates the old one), codes expire after 30 days, and reviews take up to 5 business days. [E]
FAQ
Does editing my Google Business Profile cause a suspension?
Edits themselves don't automatically suspend a profile, but they are reviewed, and edits that don't follow the guidelines (like a name with keywords, or an ineligible address) can cause problems. [C] [B]
Do I need to verify again after changing my address?
Yes: Google says if you move to a new address after verification, you must verify again. [C]
